Meeting Dr. Karen Matt
Karen Matt (pronounced ‘Mott’) grew up in Lake Jackson and graduated from Brazoswood High School. She joined the Griffith Staff as principal during the summer of 2013. She previously worked in Angleton ISD where she served as a teacher, assistant principal and principal. She was also an elementary principal in Burnet CISD. "I have the best job in the world! I have had the privilege of working with students at every grade level,” she said. “I’ve held their hands the first day of Pre- kindergarten and hugged their necks at graduation. I think this gives me a unique perspective. I understand where they begin, and I know what they must do to be successful at the next level.”
Dr. Matt earned her Associate of Arts from Brazosport College before completing her Bachelors at Midwestern State University and Masters of Education at the University of Houston - Victoria. She also earned a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies through University of Houston.
Dr. Matt’s husband, Lance, is a teacher and coach at Hightower High School in Missouri City. They have a daughter, Jordyn, who is a teacher. Their son, Kobey, is in high school and loves soccer. Dr. Matt’s mother taught at Griffith Elementary when the school first opened, so she was able to find connections with many of the staff members right away. “I am thrilled to be giving back to BISD and to be a part of the Madge Griffith family. This is a fantastic school, and I’m proud to be an Eagle!
